A Veteran's Day Poem by Brother Emmanuel Ngwainmbi
Celebrating Our War Veterans
By Brother Emmanuel Ngwainmbi, author of A Gun and a Rose.
We will never forget that
you were in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Gulf Coast, elsewhere.
You sailed out on June 17, 1917, to protect freedom.
The USS Battleship, Air force One dazzling with the Red, White and Blue took you to
communities far, unknown to you and others.
You met comrades
You freed people in bondage.
Lying in bunkers, rough turf, you fired, returned fire.
You swallowed sleepless nights under hot desert sands breathing vapor, eating ants for dinner.
You plodded through deep dismal swamps, thick dark forests dodging booby traps.
You came home with the red, white and blue flag unstained.
This November 11, we welcome you with fluttering flags, hot dogs, a cake and a beer.
We recognize the epaulets on your shoulders, the wrinkles on your face, the fatigues you
proudly wear.
Because of you, because you sacrificed your life me,
we now breathe freedom.
Robert Graves, Van Dyke, Foster, Herbert, Owen, America, and the Knights of Columbus salute
you today.
