Hank Kempton - Grand Knight

My fellow brother Knights, please join me in welcoming Father Herbert Burke as our Chaplain.  Father Burke has a long history with the Knights, and I am looking forward to his inspirational remarks at our meetings.  Father Burke has a devotion to the Rosary and, as his schedual permits, he may join us before our monthly meeting in praying the Rosary beginning at 6:30 before each meeting.

Charity is the first principle of the Knights of Columbus.  When we all joined the Knights we committed to serve our Parish and Community.  We have over 350 dues paying members, but unfortunately many are “paper Knights” and have not lived up to that commitment.  Last week, we did not have any Knights manning the tables at two of the Waxhaw Masses.  In addition, very few Knights showed up at the Masses at the Ballentyne Campus.  This has resulted in a significant reduction in our collections compared to last year.  You will hear more about that if you attend our meeting on the 1st Wednesday of the month.  Your fellow Brothers also need help with the Breakfasts, and the number of volunteers to serve at this event is way down.  I personally need help with the preparation on Friday morning.  We use Sign-Up Genius to track our service hours and each of you should be receiving those Sign-Up Genius emails.  Please look it over and fill a spot you are comfortable with remembering that you have committed to serving our Parish and Community.  

Our Parish Breakfast is this Sunday, October 11 and a Sign-Up Genius is out there so please look it over and sign up.  The following breakfast will be Sunday, November 15 and a Sign-Up Genius will be going out soon.  

The next Car Raffle ticket selling date is Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18 at all Masses on both campuses.  The Sign-Up Genius emails will be going out soon.  You go to Mass, so make the commitment to help before and after the Mass you attend.  

There are many pro-life activities coming up.  This is an opportunity to express your love for your fellow man.  See the list later in this Newsletter.  The MiraVia Banquet is coming up on October 24.  This is always a fun time and a way to show your support.  If you are interested in attending, please contact Brother Tony D Angelo or Norm Gemignani or me for more information.

Eucharistic Adoration is a great opportunity to sit in the presence of Jesus, drawing strength, peace, and grace from Him, who is truly present in the Bressed Sacrament.  St Matthew offers Adoration on Fridays following the 9am Mass until 9pm in the main campus Chapel as well well as on Saturdays following the 8am Mass until 9:45 am in the Waxhaw Worship Space.

Upcoming Activities and Volunteer Opportunities

We have many activities already planned, and I look forward to seeing how we can continue building fellowship, service, and charitable impact together throughout the year.

Brother Randy Mazur writes:

• We assisted the Allegro Foundation again this year with one of their two major annual fundraisers, Allegro's Annual Golf Invitational.  Held on Monday, 9/21 at Cedarwood Country Club, we provided volunteers on 9/20 and 9/22 to drive the St. Matthew box truck and load and unload all of the event materials for the event. 

• Volunteers are needed on the 2nd Saturday of each month for the Donated Goods Ministry. This ministry helps those in need in the Charlotte area by collecting furniture items (e.g couches, loveseats, dressers, end tables) and household goods. Items are collected in two ways:  Drop off at St. Matthew or picked up at parishioners’ homes that live within 10 miles of St. Matthew.  The items collected are distributed to help those in need.  The ministry serves a number of local charities, including: Catholic Charities, Refugee Ministry, Monroe Outreach and local Veterans through a unique relationship between the Veterans ERG (Employee Resource Group) and a group of volunteers from Raytheon and Collins Aerospace led by one of our Knights, Pete Luksas.

• Volunteers are needed the 2nd Saturday of each month from 7:45 a.m. -11 a.m. to help move furniture, unload vehicles and sort clothing and household items. Also, at 11am the team of volunteers load up trucks to deliver furniture to veterans moving into apartments in the Charlotte area. Volunteers can assist with this delivery as well from 11am-2pm. It makes for a rewarding day!
